Mixed Fortunes

Kristy Thatcher and Andrew Howie suffered Australia’s first loss to the pairing from Singapore.

Things looked promising in the opening ends of the match; however shots were hard to hold on to with the Singapore skip playing some crucial conversations keeping the Australian’s to 1.

Singapore piled on 12 unanswered shots in 7 ends to lead 13-1 and leave the Australian’s searching for answers.

Thatcher and Howie strung together three ends on the trot to reduce the margin to 6-15 behind with 4 ends to play.

The last four ends saw a series of near misses for Howie and Singapore continued to extend their margin and post a 22-6 victory over our Australian pair.

Play was quick to get underway for the final match of the night that would see our mixed fours combination line up against Singapore in a round one encounter.

The Australian’s came out of the blocks fast leading 6-0 but Singapore were ready to make a game of it and clawed their way back, however the Aussie’s remained 8-6 in front.

Australia began to dominate the match with plenty of bowls in the head but their efforts were only converted to ones on the score board.

Their persistence paid off scoring a four on the next end to take their lead to 13-6 after 12 ends.

Only one more end was completed before the two hour time limit had been reached, therefore Australia prevailed 13-8 after 13 ends.

National Training Centre coach Brett Wilkie was impressed with his team’s performance.

“It was a great team effort by our fours tonight, they have finished day one strongly and will look to replicate this performance tomorrow,” Brett Wilkie said.

Tomorrow is a big day with five matches scheduled; first up at 10:30am AEST is our mixed pair’s combination of Kristy Thatcher and Andrew Howie against Malaysia ‘D’.
