Butcher Carves up Opposition
Women’s Over 60’s Singles finishes with a thriller Rinske Butcher (North Beach) held her nerve to over come a determined Renate Coote (Thornlie) in the final of the Women’s Over 60’s Singles held at Midland Morrison Bowling Club.
Butcher had a solid 9-6 start after 9 ends, before Coote appeared to slowly work her way on top with a run of five consecutive winning ends to take a 9-12 lead before the game turned again. Butcher picked up her game to go on her own run of winning ends with a 3,2,3 and 2 to take a match winning 19-12 lead after 18 ends. With the 19th end nearing completion, the lay of the head showed a measure would be needed to determine the shot. Coote held the last bowl in her hand with time running out in her quest for the title. Showing no fear Coote played the shot of the game by playing weight through a tight gap to take the Butcher bowl out and make 3 shots to keep her in the game. A single and a four in the next two ends put Coote in the box seat with a 19-20 lead. However with nerves of steel Rinske Butcher first drew the shot bowl within inches of the jack and then with her last bowl turning over her own bowl to make two and take the game 21-20.
Earlier in the day Rinske Butcher produced the shots when needed to overcome defending champion Bev Baker (Mosman Park) 21-17. While Renate Coote got the better of Pauline Bourne (Sorrento) 21-8
